Project assurance helps Vodafone save over £3m per year

“Pelicam have supplemented our skill sets to ensure the critical delivery of key programmes for the retail division “
Antony Watkins, Director of Business  Systems, Customer Interaction - Vodafone

The Challenge

  • Pelicam were engaged to rescue Vodafone’s retail IT programme for the UK.
  • The planned IT strategy delivered little business benefit
  • £15M annual IT spend not supported by the business
  • Disaffected IT and business teams
  • Systems failure a common occurrence.

How Pelicam Helped

  • We revisited the IT strategy and worked with the business to outline key initiatives that would drive the business forward.
  • The scope of this programme was a reduction in the number of core business systems supporting the Retail Business from 26 to 8.
  • It included a new business case to deliver phase 1 of roadmap (£8m+ investment) and the implementation of a future generation integrated real-time stores trading platform
  • We persuaded the IT teams to abandon 15 projects that were resource hungry and invested in old technologies. We led projects to resolve systems failures that were generating bad press and criticism from the business.

Performance Delivered

The programme of work was successfully delivered with zero impact to retail trading 2 weeks ahead of schedule and below budget. Systems were rolled-out to 350 stores over a 10 week period, providing:

  • Chip and pin payment card processing
  • Complete renewal of retail store and data-centre infrastructure (hardware and software)
  • Implementation of full enterprise management suite of applications
  • Decommissioning of the legacy applications and environment rendered redundant by the new systems.

Key benefits include:

  • Operational support cost reduction of over £1m p.a.
  • Payment fraud risk reduction of over £2m p.a.
  • Real-time management information and control of pricing and promotions supporting increased revenue and customer acquisition
  • Integrated human resource and incentive management
  • Improved performance, resilience and security.
  • Business and IT working together to a common goal.
